3 Women-Owned Coffee Shops in San Diego You Might Not Know About (But Should!)

There’s something extra special about supporting local coffee shops—especially when they’re women-owned and rooted in community. Whether you’re looking for your next go-to latte or a new place to explore, these three San Diego cafés are well worth a visit. Each one brings its own charm, thoughtful drinks, and a welcoming atmosphere that sets them apart.

1. Lemon Grove Coffee

Lemon Grove Coffee is one of those places that feels like a well-kept local secret. Just steps from the trolley station, this colorful café offers a large open space with tons of seating, perfect for meet-ups with friends or meetings. I ordered the Sugar & Spice specialty latte (brown sugar + cinnamon), and it was incredibly well-balanced—not too sweet, not overly spiced, just smooth and satisfying. They also serve smoothies and food, making it a great all-in-one stop. Best of all, it’s women- and family-owned by Casey and her sister-in-law Hannah Calo-Witt, who also run Clairemont Coffee. Definitely a spot worth bookmarking.

2. Kind Coffee in Cortez Hill

Located in the quieter Cortez Hill area of downtown, Kind Coffee is an adorable tucked-away gem. The uphill walk to get there was a a trek, but it was well worth it! Inside, the large windows looking onto the street made it calm and inviting, with a spacious back room full of comfy seating options. I ordered their strawberry matcha, which was carefully made with real strawberries and ceremonial-grade matcha—and it was as refreshing as it sounds. I hung out for a little while chatting with the barista and some friendly customers, and have to say, this spot lives up to its name in the best way.

3. Garden Coffee in Old Town

Tucked away next to Honest Thrift Studio in Old Town, Garden Coffee feels like stepping into a magical, green oasis. The space gives a cozy indoor-outdoor feel, surrounded by lush plants and thrifted knick knacks, all available for purchase. It’s the perfect place to sit with a book, journal, or just enjoy a peaceful moment, which is exactly what I did. I ordered a hot pistachio latte on a cloudy day, and it hit the spot—rich, nutty, and comforting. This is a space that  encourages you to slow down and stay awhile, something we could all use a little more of.

4. S3 Coffee

Bonus! If you haven’t already tried S3 Coffee (another amazing women-owned spot!), check out my full review when I visited during the holidays.
